Crespis Alumni Hall of Fame Highlights a Year of Great Events

01 Jan

Encino, CA (PRWEB) December 31, 2011

As we say good-bye to 2011, Crespi Carmelite experienced another memorable year of events. Graduation is the most important event for the Crespi community, but throughout the year the school still has something for everyone in the community. The year was highlighted by C.A.P.E.R., the schools annual gala at the Roosevelt in Hollywood. Two extremely successful events followed in Westlake Village, the annual golf tournament at North Ranch Country Club and a Christmas fashion and luncheon at the Four Seasons.

Arguably, the best event of the year was the 2011 Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. The event was held on October 29 in the Crespi Alumni Memorial Gymnasium. The crowded gym was filled with many of Crespis best student athletes. This was the first year that event was led by a committee comprising of previous Hall of Fame inductees. Their insight and management helped foster a better experience for the 2011 inductees and the guests at the event.

Watch the interviews.

This year, the Crespi Carmelite High School Alumni Association was proud to honor seven inductees in to the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, two of the inductees could not attend. One was Paul Mokesi 75, an NBA Star and current Head Coach of the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League. He was a college basketball player at the University of Kansas and his tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks is the most noted part of his pro career. The second was a soccer inductee, Mike La Femina 99, class valedictorian and Mission League Defensive player of the year. La Femina graduated from the University of California Los Angeles and started his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of California, San Francisco.

Of those present, there were two football inductees to the hall of fame Dave Scheper 76 and Sean Howard 87. Scheper was a member of the 1974 and 1975 football teams at Crespi. As senior, he earned honors as the teams Most Valuable Player, Del Rey League Lineman of the Year, first team all-CIF and All-State, and was named a Scholar-Athlete by the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. He would continue to play football at the Harvard College for two years winning the Henry Lamar Award for Most Inspirational Player. After college, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School and is currently a partner at Scheper, Kim & Harris LLP.

Howard was high school All-American at Crespi Carmelite and UCLA scholarship linebacker. Seans football career was cut short by injury. He then attended the University of Oregon School of Law and earned a Juris Doctor. After three years in the legal profession, Howard was hired by the San Francisco Forty-Niners, where under the direction of GMs Bill and Terry Donahue, he began his experience with the NFL. He is currently licensed as an NFLPA contract advisor and is involved with all phases of client representation. Some of his clients have been Brandon Pettigrew, Marshawn Lynch, Shonn Greene, and Mercedes Lewis.

Also honored, were Marc Wong 82 of Crespis 1981 CIF Championship Water Polo team and Casey Snow 93 from the heralded Baseball program. In 1981, Wong helped lead Crespi to the CIF 2A Water Polo Championship and was named the CIF 2A player of the year. He was named to the All-CIF Southern Section first Team, All-Southern California Water Polo Team and chosen for the High School Coaches All-American Team. Snow was a scholarship catcher at Long Beach State. He was drafted by the Dodgers in 1996 and played five seasons. He is currently, a Fire Captain for the Bakersfield Fire Department.

The final inductee was Joe Willging 74 the recipient of the Crespi Man Award. He was Student Body Vice President, a Varsity Cheerleader, and played on the, 1973-1974 Varsity baseball team. While each of the inductees represents the ideals of the Crespi Man, Willging throughout the years has been one of the schools greatest advocates and most active alumnus. Yet in the end, they are all a Crespi Men and each inductee serves as a testament to what a student can achieve at Crespi Carmelite and beyond.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana Sheriff’s Association Host Social Media Workshop Presented by Cindy Speaker, CEO of Speaker Media and Marketing.

31 Dec

West Chester, PA (PRWEB) December 30, 2011

The Indiana Sheriffs Association and the Marion County Sheriffs Office recently co-hosted a free workshop on social media. The 5 hr worship was presented by Cindy Speaker, CEO of Speaker Media and Marketing. Ms. Speaker was the keynote for the National Sheriffs Association Convention in San Diego just a few months ago and it was there that she met Sheriff Layton.

Marion County Sheriff John Layton introduced the workshop by stating that when he heard Ms. Speaker address the convention in San Diego, a bell rang and he concluded were missing the boat. Sheriff Layton stated that he likes the idea of using social media to sell our brand. He went on to say our brand at the Marion County Sheriffs Office is that star. Our brand is to let the people of Marion County know who you are, what youre doing and how you can help them.

Ms. Speaker states that social media is about relationships, visibility, making connections on an emotional level and building a community. According to Speaker law enforcement and social media are a perfect fit. She goes on to state that what social media can do for law enforcement is to give them greater top of mind awareness and visibility in the community by helping to educate and empower citizens so that they are less likely to be victims of crime and more likely to be advocates for justice. When that happens, everyone wins.

As Sheriff Layton addressed the 50 plus workshop attendees he said if you have anything to do with this badge, you have to be ready to progress and social media is where its at. He was also clear in stating that there is a lot of the old school police work that should never leave.

Sheriff Layton and Steve Luce, Executive Director of the Indiana Sheriffs Association are real thought leaders according to Speaker. Social media will avail law enforcement of many low cost and no cost tools to disseminate valuable information to the community which will in return help make our communities safer.

Conference to Help Educators Administer New Jerseys New Anti-Bullying Bill: Workshops to Address Legal Compliance and Effective Strategies for Dealing with Bullies

03 Dec

Montclair, NJ (PRWEB) December 02, 2011

The state of New Jerseys new Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights law, which went into effect on September 1, 2011, requires all public schools to develop policies, professional development programs for staff, and mechanisms to assess and report results. To assist schools in complying with the complexities of this law, Montclair State University is hosting a conference, HIB/Anti-Bullying Initiatives: Progress, Evaluation, and Strategies in K-12 Schools.

The conference will address bullying in school settings, providing programs to help schools comply with the new law, and deal with bullies and victims in the most effective ways. It will provide information that is critical for teachers, school counselors, social workers, substance awareness coordinators, school psychologists, administrators, and school safety/anti-bullying teams.

The conference, sponsored by the Department of Counseling and Educational Leadership in the College of Education and Human Services, will take place on the campus of Montclair State University in the University Hall Conference Center on Friday, December 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration is required.

New Jerseys anti-bullying laws are among the toughest in the nation, requiring that our schools protect children from harassment, intimidation, and bullying at all grade levels. The College of Education and Human Services at Montclair State has long been committed to working with our partners in schools and districts to ensure student success, said Dean Ada Beth Cutler. This conference provides another opportunity for us to work together to develop solutions to the critical issue of bullying in schools.

Conference speakers include Retired Lt. Gary Moleta, training and development coordinator for the New Jersey Association of School Resource Officers, who is scheduled to speak from the law enforcement perspective on district and school report writing, specifics of investigations, judicial counseling concerns, evidence handling, and district policies and procedures.

Gerald Vernotica, Montclair State University associate professor and former assistant commissioner, Division of Field Services, NJDOE, will moderate a panel of current superintendents and administrators, including Susan Martz, director of the NJDOE’s Office of Educational Support Services.

Joseph Oluwole, attorney and Montclair State University assistant professor, and Gina Grasso, teacher, Caldwell/West Caldwell School District, will provide further interpretation of the anti-bullying law and its implications.

Sara Goldstein, Montclair State University associate professor, whose research focuses on bullying, will speak regarding why adolescents habitually rely on aggressive strategies in peer conflict, and how aggression and victimization in the peer group impacts individual development and academic success.

The conference will also feature presentations and workshops from Montclair State University faculty members, school administrators, and government officials on topics including:

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) July 28, 2011

Existing law in California previously allowed the court to allow anyone with a traffic violation to attend traffic school to clear their driving record, up to the discretion of the judge. Beginning July 1, 2011, a new law went into affect which severely limits the judge’s ability to grant traffic school to many drivers. TicketKick

Question by : Is there a school in Utah that offers a joint nursing/law degree?
I’m planning to start my nursing undergrad at Westminster having the Army pay for it (ROTC) then applying for law school however if there is a joint nursing/law degree I would be more interested. I plan on going into medical malpractice law.

I have an associates in General Studies.

Best answer:

Answer by ownpool
I have practiced law and have never heard of a joint nursing/law program. It would not be a program with much demand as the nursing degree would be a master’s and master’s degrees in nursing involve either nursing specialties, nursing teaching and supervision, or nursing for people with bachelor’s degrees in other fields.

Most medical malpractice attorneys do not have a nursing or medical background.

Question by Husko Avoirdupois: Scholarships to night law school programs for nonprofit employees?
I work full time for a nonprofit, and I got into law school at night and I want to go, but nonprofit work doesn’t pay very much and law school is pretty expensive. The school I’m going to doesn’t have any scholarships available for its night program, so I’m wondering about the possibility of outside funding. I’ve looked at fastweb and those sites, but there aren’t very many scholarships out there for law schools, most of the financial aid is for more academic programs. Can anyone help me out?

Best answer:

Answer by FinAidGuy
Does your school accept the FAFSA?
You should be able to get financial aid through the federal government. As for scholarships, fastweb is really the biggest database out there.
